'The Trade' - 5-part presentation
From giant, bustling cities to quaint, sleepy small towns, the opioid epidemic has touched nearly every corner of the U.S., with the problem growing at an alarming rate.

To shed light on this epidemic and its impact on American families, Edinboro University’s Social Work Department and the Center for Faculty Excellence is hosting a 5-part viewing and discussion of SHOWTIME’s original “The Trade” – a 5-episode docu-series that spotlights the crises through growers, addicts, cartel bosses and law enforcement.

Several academic departments will host panel discussions regarding the nightly topic from each perspective. The series schedule includes:

Sept. 17: Episode 1 – A documentary look inside America's heroin crisis. In Mexico, Don Miguel struggles to control the local poppy fields. In Ohio, Det. Edwards closes in on a heroin dealer. In Atlanta, Skyler moves home to get clean. Series premiere. Moderator: Dr. Elaine Rinfrette, Social Work

Tuesday, Sept. 25: Episode 2 – Don Miguel responds to a shooting as drug-related violence in Mexico continues to rise. In Columbus, Det. Edwards investigates the overdose death of a young mother. Nearby in Dayton, Richard struggles with his daughter's addiction. Moderator: Elizabeth Gillette, Nursing

Wednesday, Oct. 3: Episode 3 – A trafficker in Juarez explains how heroin makes it into the U.S. as Mexican Federal police attempt a bust. In Columbus, Agent James starts tracking the drug supply back to its source. In Atlanta, John hits the street to feed his habit. Moderator: Dr. David Pugh, Social Work

Thursday, Oct. 11: Episode 4 – Don Miguel celebrates a birthday as Mexican Federal police crackdown in Guerrero. In Columbus, Agent James locates a missing suspect who may be the key to his case. Meanwhile in Akron, Laura and Dan convince their son to enter rehab. Moderator: Dr. Wayne Hawley, Psychology

Monday, Oct. 15: Episode 5 – In Columbus, Sergeant Smith zeroes in on a dealer who's mixing heroin with Fentanyl. In Mexico, Don Miguel finds himself trapped in the drug trade. Back in Atlanta, Skyler signs himself up for long-term treatment. Series finale. Moderators: Dr. Sam Claster, Sociology; Mr. Kevin Barber, Gaudenzia, Inc.

“The Trade” is recommended for mature audiences only.
