The Hate U Give
Edinboro wraps up the month with two screenings of the 2018 American crime drama “The Hate U Give,” based on the 2017 novel by Angie Thomas. Screenings are scheduled for 5 and 8 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the Pogue Student Center’s Scot Cinema.

Starring Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall and Russell Hornsby, the film switches between the poor inner city where Starr Carter lives and the rich, white school she attends.

After Carter witnesses a fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer, both of these worlds collide and she must find her voice.

The film received acclaim from the New York Times, Rolling Stone Magazine and Ebony Magazine.

Did you know that, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 27% of professionals with a bachelor’s degree work in a job that is directly connected to their college major? Learn from alumni and other career professionals who will share how they reached success in their professional lives. How does hearing others’ professional stories impact YOU? According to the World Economic Forum, 30% of college freshman in 2016 were predicted to work in occupations that do not exist today. Gen Z students are predicted to work in over 30 different occupations over 50-60 years, and possibly change jobs every 2-3 years. Yes – that’s you. Presentations will follow the popular “Pecha-Kucha” format and a panel discussion with time for Q&A will follow. Refreshments provided.

Lunar New Year Celebration

All cultures that celebrate the Feb. 5 Lunar New Year will be represented during a special celebration at 5:30 p.m. in the Pogue Center’s Multipurpose Room.

Traditionally a modern festival in Asian countries, Edinboro will highlight Chinese culture with chopsticks lessons, Chinese letter writing and a modern Chinese dragon dance.

Often referred to as the “Spring Festival,” the Lunar New Year includes the internationally celebrated Lantern Festival. This year, Chinese culture celebrates the Year of the Pig.

Western Regional Competition for the Pennsylvania Academic Decathlon
Edinboro University is honored to host this year's Western Regional Competition for the Pennsylvania Academic Decathlon on February 15-16. More than 200 high school students from the western section of the state will visit campus to compete in a 10-event scholastic competition. The theme for the 2018–2019 Academic Decathlon is "The 1960s: A Transformational Decade." Qualifiers will go on to compete in the state championships in March and then on to national competition.

True Black History Museum
A collection of rare and authentic artifacts from generations of African-American families will be on display Feb. 15 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in Van Houten North Dining Hall. The official True Black History Museum was originally established to preserve Black history and educate society on the contributions of Black culture to mankind.

Featuring more than 150 artifacts, the collection spans from the 18th Century through today and includes highlights from the Mid-Atlantic Slave Trade, the Civil War, Reconstruction, the original Jim Crow laws, Civil Rights, Black Power movement and modern day.

Soul Food Luncheon
Lunch will be served on Feb. 22 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Learning Commons – the second floor conference room in the Baron-Forness Library. In addition to delicious food prepared by Edinboro personnel, presenters will dig into the Harlem Renaissance to explore the intellectual, social and artistic explosion of the 1920s in New York City.

Lasting through the mid-1930s, the Harlem Renaissance focused on African-American literature, music, stage performances and art, including Claude McKay, Alain LeRoy Locke, Aaron Douglas, Marcus Garvey, Zora Neale Hurston, Duke Ellington, Josephine Baker and W. E. B. Du Bois.

The Hate U Give
Edinboro wraps up the month with two screenings of the 2018 American crime drama “The Hate U Give,” based on the 2017 novel by Angie Thomas. Screenings are scheduled for 5 and 8 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the Pogue Student Center’s Scot Cinema.

Starring Amandla Stenberg, Regina Hall and Russell Hornsby, the film switches between the poor inner city where Starr Carter lives and the rich, white school she attends.

After Carter witnesses a fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer, both of these worlds collide and she must find her voice.

The film received acclaim from the New York Times, Rolling Stone Magazine and Ebony Magazine.

Summary:
Transgender people come from many different ways of life and from many backgrounds, and it is difficult to tell if someone is transgender just by looking. Join the discussion about transgender language and identity, and learn what it really means to be a transgender ally.

Panelists:
Tyler Titus, LPC
Tyler Titus, father of two amazing little humans, is a Licensed Professional Counselor, advocate, trauma specialist, and elected School Board Director. Tyler became the first openly elected transgender official in the State of Pennsylvania in November 2017. He currently serves as the Vice President on the Board of Directors for the Crime Victim Center. He was recently appointed to co-chair of the State’s first Commission of LGBT Affairs created by Governor Tom Wolf. Tyler regularly presents at local and national conferences on the topics of trauma, suicide, and ways that communities can engage under-served populations.

Michelle Wolf, MFT
Michelle Wolf, a male to female transgender woman, is a marriage and family therapist in the Erie, PA area and has been working with transgender clients for many years as a therapist. Michelle originally hails from Buffalo, NY, where she was the chair of the Spectrum Transgender Support Group of Western New York. Michelle also developed and has been teaching a Trans 101 seminar to universities, businesses, government institutions and other organizations for the past five years. Michelle uses personal anecdotes and candor as well as a sense of humor to help bridge the gap between transgender and cisgender people in order to promote comfortable understanding and mutual respect.
