Does Confucianism Impact the Presentation of ‘Girl-groups’ in K-pop Music Videos?
Shayma Musa, Undergraduate Student, Department of Biology and Health Sciences
Among all Confucian influenced countries, Korea is unique in that Confucianism was codified into law. That codification resulted in Confucianism being woven into the cultural factor of Korea as a whole. With the advent of K-pop and Korean popular culture, the Korean woman’s body has been pulled from the shadows and placed in the most public of spheres for the public (and the world) to observe and appreciate it. However, the increased visibility of women does not translate into the loosening of Confucian ideals on Korean society. The presenter explores the intersection between Confucianism and the presentation of Women in K-pop music videos.
