Successful Women in Physics and the Experiences that Inspired Them

Halie Lewis, Jordan Gregor and Dr. Corinne Schaeffer, of the Math and Computer Science Department, will present "Successful Women in Physics and the Experiences that Inspired them." In physics, women make up approximately 20% of the field.  Much of the existing research has focused on obstacles women face that result in leaving the field. This research project instead focused on attempting to identify positive factors that led women to successfully pursue and persist in physics careers. For this project, 51 women physicists were surveyed and interviewed to identify factors influencing their success, advice for future female physicists, how to increase the number of women in physics, and how they combated challenges many women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) face. Details pertaining to all aspects of this project will be shared, including the findings and implications for future work.  Our hope is that these results can assist in recreating influential experiences for young women in an effort to decrease the gender gap not only it physics, but possibly in other STEM disciplines. The Women’s Philanthropy Council at Edinboro University generously provided funding for this undergraduate research project. The event will take place in Ross Hall, Room 135.
