The Rise of Spiritualism and the Women's Suffrage Movement

As part of Women's History Month, Susan A. Stush of the Financial Aid Office will present "The Rise of Spiritualism and the Women's Suffrage Movement." Spiritualism is considered to be an important conduit for the progression of the Women’s Movement during the 19th century. Through this newly discovered religion, women were offered an escape from the indignities of Victorian era life and gave them a platform of power, equality and freedom of public speaking that paved way for the suffragists of the day.  In a small Western New York town approximately 70 miles east of here called Lily Dale, both parties met on common ground. New and radical ideas were offered there that were meant to turn the conventional religious community on its ear and support the women’s rights crusade all the way to the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
