Women's History Month: “On the Road” Books by Women Authors
Barry Gray of Baron-Forness Library presents  “On the Road” Books by Women Authors on Monday, March 10, from noon to 1 p.m. in Baron-Forness Library, Room 715, as part of Women's History Month at Edinboro University.

For more than 100 years, women have documented their travels across America by car. This presentation describes several representative road books by women authors and compares them to accounts by male travelers. It contrasts themes of escape and empowerment to show how different authors approach the experience of cross country travel and describe it in their narratives. These works are important primary sources for the cultural and intellectual history of the United States, because the development of cars, the automobile industry, and highways have greatly influenced American history in the past century.

Women's History Month Video and Discussion: "The Women of Harry Potter"
Dr. Corbin Fowler, Philosophy professor in the English and Liberal Studies Department, will lead a discussion of the documentary “The Women of Harry Potter” on Wednesday, March 12, from 11 a.m. to noon in Cooper Hall, Room 172, as part of Women's History Month at Edinboro University.

Nothing can be more inspirational for life than the book and movie stories and characters we hold near and dear to our hearts. In this film documentary, J.K. Rowling talks about the strong women of her Harry Potter saga, and how she wanted to portray strong women in a variety of ways: young and old, single and married, professional and stay-at-home mom, hero and villain.  She also aimed for a variety of believable female characters in terms of whether they were serious or silly, athletic or not, intellectual or not.  Few women have been as creative, ambitious, or have become as famous and wealthy as J.K. Rowlling.  Following the film, Dr. Fowler will invite students to discuss the video.

Women's History Month: “A Grand Convulsion in Society”: Cameos of Civil War Women in Song & Story
“A Grand Convulsion in Society”: Cameos of Civil War Women in Song & Story with music by Judith Avers & narration by John Burt will be presented Thursday, March 13, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the Dr. William P. Alexander Music Center Recital Hall as part of Women's History Month at Edinboro University.

As part of the observation of the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, singer-song writer Judith Avers and historian John Burt have put together a program from the journals, letters and remembrances of women who lived during the time, which one matron in Washington, D.C., described as “a grand convulsion in society.”

The stories and songs represent a group of fascinating women and their varying roles in the Civil War: Socialites, eye-witnesses to major events, spies, scouts, nurses and doctors, teachers, soldiers and widows. The program provides an interesting, informative and different way to look at this defining American experience from the words of the women who lived it.
