Barry Gray to speak about travel and gender Do women and men experience travel differently? Do they write about their journeys from different perspectives? Can they explore the same place and have distinctive viewpoints?
Barry Gray, Technical Services Librarian at Baron-Forness Library of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, has researched those questions. He will be giving a presentation on Monday, April 21, from 6:30 to 7:30pm at the Millcreek Branch Library, on his findings.
Gray will contrast prominent female “on the road” authors with well-known male travel writers when he speaks on April 21 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Millcreek Branch Library Community Room, 2088 Interchange Road, outside the Millcreek Mall. His presentation is free and open to the public.

Created Equal: America’s Civil Rights Struggle film series’ purpose is to introduce four documentaries with riveting new footage illustrating the history of civil rights in America. Edinboro University will offer a series of screenings, lectures, discussion forums, and scholarly presentations centered on this collection of documentaries beginning February 20, 2014.
Film and Discussion: "The Abolitionists"
"The Abolitionists," which vividly brings to life the struggles of the men and women who led the battle to end slavery, will be shown Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in Compton Hall, Room 107A. The event is part of both the "Created Equal: America's Civil Rights Struggle" film and lecture series and the Lincoln and the Civil War Lecture Series.
Professor Umeme Sababu of the History, Anthropology, and World Language Department will lead the discussion.

Porreco College Open House Open House events introducing prospective students to Porreco College’s program offerings and new Porreco Promise scholarships will be held every Wednesday through May 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the college, 2951 W. 38th St., Erie.
An additional open house is planned Saturday, May 3, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Those who attend the events can see the campus and speak with financial aid and admissions representatives as well as the Porreco College staff.
Beginning this fall, Porreco College will offer programs preparing students for careers in business, social work, customer service, advanced manufacturing and other fields at community college prices.

Lincoln and the Civil War Lecture Series: "The Iconic Lincoln" "The Iconic Lincoln," a presentation by Professor Umeme Sababu and response by Dr. Ihor Bemko, both of the Department of History, Anthropology, and World Languages, will be presented Wednesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. in Compton Hall, Room 107A, as part two of the three-part Lincoln and the Civil War Lecture Series.
"The question I am asking: Is/was Lincoln the 'Great Emancipator,' or was he forced into glory by the political, social, economic climate of which the abolitionist was an important part?" Professor Sababu states. "Second, did enslaved African Americans simply wait around for some miraculous decree, or were they utilizing their own tactics and strategy (human agency) to strike out for freedom during the ensuing war years?"

Opera Workshop Spring Concert The Edinboro University Opera Workshop Spring Concert will be presented April 24 at 5 p.m. in the Dr. William P. Alexander Music Center Recital Hall.
Lincoln and the Civil War Lecture Series: A Photographic Examination: Pennsylvania in the Civil War Michael G. Kraus will present "A Photographic Examination: Pennsylvania in the Civil War" on Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. in Compton Hall, Room 107A, as the concluding presentation of the three-part Lincoln and the Civil War Lecture Series.
Kraus, an Edinboro Univeristy fine arts alumnus and 2010 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, is curator of collections at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial and Museum in Pittsburgh, an author, historical consultant and artist. His sculptures include the life-size statue of Erie County Civil War hero Col. Strong Vincent that stands outside the Erie Maritime Museum and Blasco Memorial Library in Erie, Pa.
Kraus' presentation examines Pennsylvania’s contribution to the Civil War as seen in the surviving photographic record.
Guitar Ensemble Concert The Edinboro University Guitar Ensemble will present a concert April 24 at 8 p.m. in the Dr. William P. Alexander Music Center Recital Hall.
Edinboro Film Series presents "The Congress" "The Congress," Best Animated Feature at the European Film Awards, directed by Ari Folman and starring Robin Wright, Harvey Keitel and Jon Hamm, will be presented by the Edinboro Film Series on Thursday, April 24, at 8:30 p.m. in the Frank G. Pogue Student Center Scot Cinema.
Filmmaker and EU faculty member Brad Pattullo will introduce the film.
Films are selected by a student board and series founder John C. Lyons.
Admission: Free for EU students, faculty and staff with I.D. $5 general admission. Film Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania membership cards also accepted.
