Porreco College Open House
Open House events introducing prospective students to Porreco College’s program offerings and new Porreco Promise scholarships will be held every Wednesday through May 28 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the college, 2951 W. 38th St., Erie.

An additional open house is planned Saturday, May 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. 

Those who attend the events can see the campus and speak with financial aid and admissions representatives as well as the Porreco College staff.

Beginning this fall, Porreco College will offer programs preparing students for careers in business, social work, customer service, advanced manufacturing and other fields at community college prices.

Lincoln and the Civil War Lecture Series: "The Iconic Lincoln"
"The Iconic Lincoln," a presentation by Professor Umeme Sababu and response by Dr. Ihor Bemko, both of the Department of History, Anthropology, and World Languages, will be presented Wednesday, April 23, at 6 p.m. in Compton Hall, Room 107A, as part two of the three-part Lincoln and the Civil War Lecture Series.

"The question I am asking: Is/was Lincoln the 'Great Emancipator,' or was he forced into glory by the political, social, economic climate of which the abolitionist was an important part?" Professor Sababu states. "Second, did enslaved African Americans simply wait around for some miraculous decree, or were they utilizing their own tactics and strategy (human agency) to strike out for freedom during the ensuing war years?"

Lincoln and the Civil War Lecture Series: A Photographic Examination: Pennsylvania in the Civil War
Michael G. Kraus will present "A Photographic Examination: Pennsylvania in the Civil War" on Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. in Compton Hall, Room 107A, as the concluding presentation of the three-part Lincoln and the Civil War Lecture Series.

Kraus, an Edinboro Univeristy fine arts alumnus and 2010 recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award, is curator of collections at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial and Museum in Pittsburgh, an author, historical consultant and artist. His sculptures include the life-size statue of Erie County Civil War hero Col. Strong Vincent that stands outside the Erie Maritime Museum and Blasco Memorial Library in Erie, Pa.
 
Kraus' presentation examines Pennsylvania’s contribution to the Civil War as seen in the surviving photographic record.

Edinboro Film Series presents "The Congress"
"The Congress," Best Animated Feature at the European Film Awards, directed by Ari Folman and starring Robin Wright, Harvey Keitel and Jon Hamm, will be presented by the Edinboro Film Series on Thursday, April 24, at 8:30 p.m. in the Frank G. Pogue Student Center Scot Cinema. 

Filmmaker and EU faculty member Brad Pattullo will introduce the film.

Films are selected by a student board and series founder John C. Lyons.

Admission: Free for EU students, faculty and staff with I.D. $5 general admission. Film Society of Northwestern Pennsylvania membership cards also accepted.

Fun For A Change 5k
This race is brought to you by Alpha Sigma Tau of Edinboro University of Pennsylvanina. This race is held around earth day in honor of Pine Mountain Settlement School in which the proceeds will be donated. This organization has provided environmental education to today's youth since 1913. For more information on Pine Mountain Settlement school go to http://pinemountainsettlementschool.com/ The race will be held rain or shine so dress for the weather! Check in will begin at 7am in McComb Fieldhouse and the race will begin at 8am. Free parking will be available in the McComb parking lot across the street. There will also be a chinese auction going on! The basket winners will be announced after the race, before the awards ceremony.

Relay for Life of Edinboro University
Fight the battle against Cancer

Relay for Life

A Relay for Life fundraising walk for the fight against cancer will be held Sunday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium on the Edinboro University campus.

Organizers of this return of the Relay for Life to campus after a brief hiatus encourage students and employees to participate in the walk or donate to a team. The event has a Facebook page  and a website where participants can sign up and donations can be made.

10th Annual Thesis Seminar in Writing Presentations

The Tenth Annual Thesis Seminar in Writing Presentations sponsored by the Department of English and Liberal Studies will occur on Tuesday, April 29, and Wednesday, April 30, in Reeder Lecture Hall.

Students in this year's Seminar will present selections from their semester-long Thesis Projects: poetry, short fiction, essays, novels, and a video game script will all go public for the first time. 

Doors open at 6:00, and presentations begin at 6:30. Everyone's welcome, and free refreshments will be available.

The April 29 session will feature Aryn Balogh, Jeff Keeler, Caitlin Marie Adams, Mat Walker and Pauline Gavlock.

The April 30 session will feature Nicholas Longstreth, Amanda Feltenberger, Sarah Atwell, Eric Law and Marissa Coffey.

Confronting the Concussion Crisis (Multi-Day Event)

Former NFL defensive back Mark Kelso will address sports-related concussions in a talk, titled “Confronting the Concussion Crisis,” at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, in Compton Hall, Room 107A, Edinboro University. The cost is $10 general admission and $5 for students and President’s Pass holders.
