The Black Transgender Community and Social Justice

04:00 PM

The Black Transgender Community and Social Justice; How Black Transgender Community Became Catalyst for Social Justice

Presenters: Dena Stanley, CEO & Founder TransYOUniting; Dr. William Koehler, chairperson of the Edinboro's Social Work Department, Dr. Adrienne Dixon, associate professor in the Counseling, School Psychology and Special Education; and Dalen Hooks, Central Outreach Wellness Center

While the Civil Rights Movement resulted in monumental legal changes for a country just 100 years removed from slavery, African Americans continue to experience bias, discrimination, and prejudice at all levels of society.

LGBTQ African Americans often live at the intersection of racism. In 2020, there was an unprecedented number of murders of trans or non-conforming people - the majority of which were black transgender women. This presentation will explore the intersection of gender and race and the implications for the social justice movement.

This virtual presentation, which is sponsored by EU's Frederick Douglass Institute, is part of Edinboro University's Black History Month event series. For Zoom information, visit www.edinboro.edu/bhm or contact Dr. Dixon at amdixon@edinboro.edu
